Silencer Packing Maintenance and Replacement
The Delkevic range of silencers utilize thermally and mechanically resistant silencer packing, but due to the nature and function of the silencer itself, over a period of time this packing will deteriorate. A repacking kit container the packing material, stainless steel rivets and high temperature silicon sealant is available directly from Delkevic.
As with any silencer it is necessary to periodically check the integrity of packing material, this can initially be achieved by simply listening to the exhaust tone. If the exhaust tone is uncharacteristically loud or metallic/hollow sounding, most likely the packing needs to be replaced.
The average lifespan of the packing material is dependent upon a number of factors e.g. the load applied, riding style of the user, engine size and configuration etc, for example, a large single or twin cylinder bike will tend to require shorter packing intervals than a 4 cylinder bike of the same displacement. That being said, it is not uncommon for singles and twins to go 10K miles between repacks and 4 cylinders to go 15K or more.
If the packing material is found to have deteriorated, it should be replaced. There will be a drop in engine performance. The deterioration also affects the heat insulation properties protecting the exterior sleeve of the silencer. If repacking is not done there is a high risk of damaging the outer sleeve and also any body panels/fairings that are mounted in close proximity.
Baffle Fitment 225mm Oval and all Round Silencers
Please note if you have any other silencer, the baffle is delivered installed on the outlet with a bolt.
Remove blanking bolt from silencer and keep safe.
Please note the bolts have different sizes. Insert baffle and align threaded portion with hole. It is a tight fit and may need to be tapped in with a wooden dowel. Secure with the smaller bolt. Fit silencer to link pipe.After your first ride out, check all fasteners for tightness, especially the baffle bolt.
Silencer Fitting Instructions
Congratulations on your choice of a Delkevic Silencer!
Your Delkevic Exhaust is a precision manufactured product, designed for ease of fit, power and reliability.
Please read the instructions carefully before attempting to fit the exhaust system.
Your Delkevic silencer may be supplied with a white protective film fitted; this must be removed prior to starting the engine.
Use good quality penetrating oil when removing the original silencer, as Delkevic cannot accept responsibility for broken or damaged fixings. We recommend using new gaskets where appropriate and the use of high temperature exhaust sealant (supplied) around all joints when fitting the silencer. Also it is important to us a small amount of oil/grease to lubricate all threads (i.e. copper slip).
Remove standard rear silencer unit (complete with standard gasket) and any link pipe that is used to attach the silencer to the header pipe outlet, wrap it up and keep it safe for future use.
Before fitting your Delkevicsilencer ensure that all gasket surfaces are clean and rust free.
Locate the mounting strap and fit the internal rubber protection strip to the inside face of the strap.
Apply a 3mm bead of high temperature silicone sealant to all mating surfaces.
The silencer and pipe can now be slotted together but do not tighten the clamp.
Install the assembly onto the header section outlet but do not tighten.

Hang the assembly in place using the mounting strap supplied, not if the hanger forms a “b” shape with the mounting lugs offset, these should be fitted towards the inside of the silencer.
The link pipe can be rotated in either direction until you are happy with the silencer alignment (pay attention to any stand stops, spring hooks etc.)
Ensure there is adequate clearance between the exhaust system, swinging arm and any other parts sensitive to high temperature.
Working from the front side of the bike, tighten all clamps securely.
Before starting remove any protective film from the silencer and mounting strap.
Where baffles are fitted, please ensure they are fastened tightly before use. Delkevic cannot assume liability for lost baffles.
All Delkevic road exhaust systems are developed usng freshly serviced low mileage motorcycles with standard jetting/maps/filters etc. With the vast majority of bikes no adjustment will be required after fitting one of our systems, but as with any exhaust system it is impossible to guarantee that no adjustments will be required 100% of the time as it is dependent on many variable factors i.e. environment, type of fuel used, condition of engine tune, mileage of engine, wear in carburetors etc. hence it is recommended after fitting a Delkevic silencer the bike is checked on a Dyno and a fuel mixture test performed, this is of the upmost importance if fitting a RACE silencer as engine damage may result.
RACE SYSTEMS-IMPORTANT NOTES
Where a race system is supplied and fitted to any road going machine, it is worth noting that sometimes their course does not follow the exact lines of the original equipment. Therefore, it is recommended that heat resistant material (not supplied) always be fitted where pipe work sits close to any paneling or anywhere there may be a danger of head damaging panels. Accordingly, some level of mechanical knowledge is required as some machines may also require minor modification to ensure safe and proper fitment. Due to the nature of race systems it is the responsibility of the owner to ensure safe and adequate fitting.
SAFETY NOTICE-HEAT HAZARD
When run, the surface of the exhaust systems becomes very hot; due care should be exercised especially when the machine is left unattended after running, to prevent accidental contact with the system or silencer. Delkevic cannot be responsible for any damages incurred by fitting either by purchaser or any other third party and any ancillaries, such as baffles are correctly installed and tight before usage.
Exclusion of Liability
The manufacture, importer or dealer shall not be liable for any incidental damage including personal injury or any other damages caused by improper installation or operation of a Delkevic exhaust system. When installing the Delkevic exhaust system it is the fitters’ responsibility to ensure there is enough clearance between the exhaust system and any other parts sensitive to high temperature.
Any damage caused by the improper installation, use or maintenance of the Delkevic exhaust system including accident, modification, improper or competition use will result in the warranty being null and void.
Any warranty claim is subject to normal use of the silencer and excludes items subject to normal wear (gaskets and silencer packing)
Do not attempt to install the Delkevic exhaust system onto a motorcycle for which it was not designed.
When the exhaust system gets very hot during operation, be careful not to burn yourself on the exhaust or any exhaust components, even when the motor is not running. Also, warn others of the risk of hot exhaust systems, especially children.
Delkevic exhaust system kits may contain chemical products, handle with care, do not inhale or swallow. Avoid excessive contact with skin and eyes. Keep out of reach of children. Contact poison control immediately if ingested.
Stainless Steel Exhaust Care
T-304 Stainless Steel is a premium alloy containing a minimum of 18% chromium and a minimum of 8% nickel along with other alloying elements. It is the preferred alloy for the manufacture of products subject to high head and corrosive conditions. Chromium increases the hardness of the steel and makes it more resistant to corrosion and oxidation. Nickel strengthens the steel and further increases it’s resistance to corrosion and oxidation.
Will it Stain?
YES! The name says it all. It’s stain-less steel, not stain-free steel. Nevertheless, it will stain much less than other steels or alloys and it will never rust (which is probably the reason it was purchased). With proper care, staining can be minimized or eliminated. Frequent washing (only clean your exhaust after it is cool to the touch) with hot water and a mild low acid detergent will help to maintain the polished look of your new exhaust as long as possible. If it is necessary to remove oil or road tar, wait for the system to cool, wash first with mineral spirits and immediately wash with soapy water, rise off with hot clean water, then buff dry.
Organic compounds picked up from the road including engine oil and antifreeze, if left on the exhaust, will eventually bake onto the metal surface and will be extremely hard to remove. If the metal is not cleaned properly the color of the organic will change to a black or a dark reddish brown that may resemble rust. At this point, the only way to clean the surface is to scrub with a fine stainless steel wool pad, wash with warm soapy water, rinse with clean water and buff dry.
Why does Stainless Steel change color?
When stainless steel is heated up several of the alloying elements will precipitate out and migrate to the surface, thereby affecting the color. The first element to precipitate is Carbon which gives the metal a gold sheen. No amount of polishing will remove it. When the exhaust turns a blue hue it is the result of excess heat changing the structure of the chromium crystals in the metal.
